In this edition, we explore how global leaders are reshaping the AI landscape. Microsoft and Google are committing over $16 billion to boost AI infrastructure across Europe, while Amazon expands its AI-driven procurement tools to make business buying smarter and more predictive.

IBM’s latest study reveals how Chief Data Officers are evolving strategies to close the gap between AI ambition and data readiness.

And finally, OpenAI introduces GPT-5.1, a major leap in reasoning and conversational intelligence that brings AI interactions closer to human-like communication.

Microsoft and Google Pledge $16 Billion to Boost AI Infrastructure in Europe

U.S. tech giants Microsoft and Google are investing more than $16 billion to expand artificial intelligence infrastructure across Europe. The move marks one of the largest joint commitments yet to strengthen AI capacity beyond the United States.

Microsoft will invest over $10 billion to develop a large data centre hub in Sines, Portugal.

The facility, set to launch early next year, is being built in partnership with Nvidia, U.K.-based Nscale Global Holdings, and Start Campus.

It will feature around 12,600 Nvidia GB300 graphics processing units, designed to power advanced AI workloads.

Google, on the other hand, is investing more than $6 billion to enhance its infrastructure in Germany.

Both companies aim to meet Europe’s growing demand for cloud and AI computing resources while reinforcing their positions as leaders in the global AI ecosystem.

Amazon Expands AI Footprint in B2B Buying With New Conversational Tool

Amazon Business has launched the Amazon Business Assistant, a conversational AI tool designed to simplify and personalise the purchasing process.

Powered by Amazon Bedrock, it helps users identify savings, answer buying questions in real time, and make data-driven decisions. The tool is now available to U.S. customers at no additional cost.

New Features for Cost Control

Alongside the assistant, Amazon introduced Savings Insights for Business Prime members and Spend Anomaly Monitoring for enterprise buyers.

These tools analyse spending data, detect unusual purchase patterns, and highlight cost-saving opportunities — giving organisations better oversight without slowing procurement.

Expanding Into Industry Solutions

Amazon is also working with Deloitte and AWS to develop AI-driven solutions for manufacturing and utilities.

Launching in early 2026, they will use predictive analytics to improve supply chain and asset management. With over 8 million customers worldwide, Amazon Business continues to evolve from a buying platform into a strategic AI-powered procurement hub.

IBM Study: CDOs Redefine Strategies as AI Ambitions Outpace Readiness

A new global study from the IBM Institute for Business Value reveals that while Chief Data Officers (CDOs) are driving enterprise AI adoption, many say their data infrastructure is not yet ready to support it.

Based on insights from 1,700 CDOs worldwide, the report highlights that 81% are prioritising investments to accelerate AI initiatives — yet only 26% feel confident their data can enable new AI-driven revenue streams.

From Data Custodians to Business Strategists

The study shows a shift in the CDO role from governance to business strategy. 92% of leaders believe focusing on business outcomes is essential for success, but only a third can clearly demonstrate how data drives measurable results.

Meanwhile, 84% say their unique data products already offer competitive advantages, underscoring the growing importance of proprietary data as a differentiator.

Skills and Culture Remain Key Barriers

Despite progress, a shortage of advanced data skills is slowing momentum. Nearly half of CDOs cite talent gaps as a major challenge — up from 32% in 2023.

IBM’s study also finds that while most organisations are promoting data democratisation and stewardship, building a truly data-driven culture remains one of the toughest obstacles to effectively scaling AI.
