IBM Unveils Content-Aware Storage to Supercharge Generative AI with Enterprise Data

IBM is finally making storage systems “content aware,” enabling AI to access the enterprise’s hidden data.

In a significant leap forward, IBM Research and IBM Storage are collaborating to turn conventional storage into an active AI enabler. Their new concept — Content-Aware Storage (CAS) — redefines how generative AI can utilize enterprise data without moving or transforming it manually.

The Problem: Enterprise Data Locked Away

Enterprises sit on massive data estates — from user manuals to sales reports — but most of it is stored in raw, unstructured formats (files, documents, objects) that LLMs can’t access. While Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG) is a promising solution, traditional RAG pipelines are complex to build, difficult to scale, and expensive to maintain due to challenges with:

  • Data security
  • Freshness
  • Scalability
  • Cost

The Solution: Content-Aware Storage (CAS)

Instead of treating storage as a passive vault, CAS transforms it into an intelligent, secure, and AI-ready infrastructure by integrating:

  1. Data processing pipelines
  2. Vector databases
  3. Storage systems
  4. Dedicated AI compute

This integration allows enterprises to:

  • Embed AI workflows within the storage layer
  • Perform real-time vectorization and similarity search.
  • Maintain native access controls for security and compliance.
  • Ensure live data updates and eliminate batch reprocessing.

How It Works

  • Docling (IBM’s open-source tool) powers high-quality document extraction.
  • Granite 2B Vision model supports multimodal use cases.
  • Granite embedding models enable efficient vector search with lower latency.
  • Red Hat AI platform orchestrates model deployment.

Security and Freshness — By Design

CAS eliminates the need to sync external vector DBs by using the storage system’s ACLs. This ensures real-time permission updates and high compliance. With Active File Management (AFM), CAS also supports automatic pipeline triggers on data changes, reducing reprocessing overhead.

Scalable, Accurate Search at Scale

IBM’s approach enables:

  • Real-time search over 10B vectors with 60ms latency at 90% recall
  • Exact vector search with 100% recall using IBM Spyre AI Accelerator
  • Dual-mode flexibility for speed or precision, depending on business need

No Migration Required

CAS’s biggest strength is its ability to work with existing file, object, and HDFS systems. Enterprises don’t need to shift their entire data estate—CAS simply layers intelligence over what’s already in place.

IBM Demonstrates Chain-of-Thought Reasoning with Granite Models

IBM has introduced a comprehensive tutorial showcasing how Chain-of-Thought (CoT) prompting can enhance the reasoning performance of its Granite Instruct large language models (LLMs).

The tutorial, authored by Bryan C. Bentley Hargrave and published on May 10, 2025, explains how CoT prompting enables LLMs to produce step-by-step reasoning instead of jumping directly to answers, leading to more accurate and explainable outputs.

Unlike conventional prompting, which seeks direct responses, CoT prompting guides the model to “think aloud” in natural language. This method significantly improves accuracy in multistep problem-solving, logical inference, and comparison tasks.

The tutorial demonstrates how Granite Instruct models—fine-tuned with built-in reasoning capabilities—can toggle internal reasoning processes based on the complexity of the task. Developers can compare outputs from standard prompts and CoT prompts to see how the model’s internal logic unfolds in real time.

By activating CoT mode, the model samples multiple reasoning paths and selects the most consistent one, improving reliability.

Using LangChain and Replicate, the tutorial walks developers through setting up models, constructing prompts, and evaluating responses on examples such as version comparisons, logic puzzles, math problems, and software versioning (including Maven semantics).

The notebook and examples are part of IBM’s open-source Granite Community, available on GitHub. This community provides developers the tools and code to integrate CoT prompting into their applications.

Why it matters

Chain-of-Thought prompting helps move LLMs from black-box responders to transparent, explainable reasoning engines, which is crucial for enterprise-grade AI applications.

OpenAI Launches “OpenAI for Countries” to Foster Democratic AI Globally

OpenAI has announced a new initiative, OpenAI for Countries, to support nations worldwide that seek to build AI infrastructure based on democratic principles.

This program is part of the broader Stargate project, a significant investment in AI infrastructure in the United States launched earlier this year in partnership with Oracle and SoftBank.

The Stargate project’s first supercomputing campus is operational in Abilene, Texas, with additional sites planned.

Building on this success, OpenAI has received numerous requests from governments eager to develop their AI infrastructure.

Recognizing the critical role such infrastructure will play in future economic growth and national development, OpenAI aims to help these countries establish their own “Stargates” and promote AI that upholds democratic values.

At the core of this initiative is democratic AI—AI that respects long-standing democratic principles, including individuals’ freedom to choose how they interact with AI, safeguards against governmental misuse for control, and encouragement of a free market to ensure broad distribution of AI’s benefits.

It emphasizes that close collaboration with the US government is essential to advancing these goals.

OpenAI for Countries – A Unique Partnership Model

  • Build secure, in-country data centers to maintain data sovereignty, stimulate local industries, and enable AI customization tailored to each country’s needs and compliance requirements.
  • Provide localized versions of ChatGPT that support improved healthcare, education, and public services, adapted for local languages, cultures, and future global AI standards.
  • We will continue to enhance AI security and safety controls, including physical and operational safeguards, while respecting democratic processes and human rights through global democratic input.
  • Jointly establish national start-up funds, combining local and OpenAI capital to nurture AI ecosystems that create new jobs, companies, and revenue streams, supporting both public and private sectors.
  • Support the expansion of the global Stargate network, reinforcing US-led AI leadership and creating a worldwide infrastructure that promotes democratic AI.

OpenAI plans to launch the first phase of this initiative with up to 10 countries or regions. It aims to build lasting collaborations that foster innovation while ensuring AI development remains transparent, safe, and democratic.

This initiative reflects OpenAI’s commitment to enabling global AI progress while providing a clear alternative to authoritarian approaches concentrate power through AI deployment. OpenAI invites interested countries to engage through their US representatives and OpenAI’s global offices.
